Why Open Source?
Today, using IT systems built on the basis of open-source software in business and administration is much more than just a new trend. It is an increasingly common practice which proves the high awareness of IT department directors.
The essence of open software is the free access to the source code and the possibility to modify it without restrictions. Such a solution allows for adjusting the application to the specificity of the mission of a given enterprise in a unique and precise way. Closed-source commercial programmes are not able to meet this challenge. Among other advantages of using open source software there is the possibility to make it freely available, the ensuing enormous savings on license fees, the functionality tested by thousands of users, and the security which follows from the common access to the source code.
On the other hand, however, some aspects of applying solutions based on open-source licenses still give rise to fears. The most often repeated are questions about the pace of introducing open source products and the guarantee of technical support in system maintenance.
TouK understands these doubts. Every day in our work we take up the challenge of resolving them. The number of projects we have completed successfully, for whose architecture we used the elements of open-source software, confirms the usefulness of applying open-source components.
The practical knowledge of the specificity of open-source products allows us to select reliable solutions only. In areas where open source does not equal the quality of commercial software, our team does not hesitate to recommend the latter. Also, integrating software based on open-source licenses with proprietary products does not pose a problem for us.
