165 participants, 87570 lines of code, 2380183 bytes – this is the statistics of this year’s Internet-based Competition for Fighting Programmes (Internetowy Turniej Programów Walczących), organised by IT Student Association (Koło Naukowe Informatyków UW). On 22 November, we will get to know the names of the winners of the first three places in the competition.
The Internet-based Competition for Fighting Programmes is the only such event in Poland. It consists in writing a programme which, towards the end of the competition, will face programmes created by other competitors. The competitors can use one of the following languages: C++, C, Java, Pascal or OCaml. The game they play changes every year.
- This year it was the “triangles” game, which is similar to the “cake”, “dots” and other well-known games from our high school times - says Arek Burdach of TouK, who entered a player programmed by himself already for the second time changes every year.
165 competitors who try their hand in the competition means over six times and a half more than in 2002, when the first such tournament took place. Only 25 people took part in it then

The idea of the competition was conceived by the members of Koło Naukowe Informatyków Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, who were looking for an interesting form of presentation for the Science Festival.
- Afterwards, year by year the competition grew in size – says Paweł Parys, the chairman of KNIUW. - Generally speaking, it looks similar to the first edition, but it is becoming increasingly professional – he adds.
TouK affiliates with the competition through Rafał Rusin, who invented the Microwars game as a member of KNIUW in 2003. The graphics were developed by his brother Mirek.
- The game consisted in steering a group of tanks and heavy guns on a board with obstacles so as to destroy an identical group of the enemy - explains Rafał.
Rafał Rusin also created the judge, which can be used by the competitors to test their programmes. The idea was appealing enough for the arbiter to have an important role in the tournament until now. Every year it is adapted to the new games.
The preliminary results of ITPW 2008 are available on the website of the competition. We already know the best 10 competitors. Soon we will get to know who enters the podium and gets the prizes funded by TouK.
